The army created by the Second Continental Congress in 1775 was the Continental Army. Congress established it on June 14, shortly after fighting began between colonial forces and Britain at Lexington and Concord.

George Washington was appointed commander in chief on June 19 and took command in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in July. The army brought together troops from the individual colonies under a national military organization, although recruitment, supplies, pay, and discipline remained persistent problems.

The Continental Army served alongside state militias and foreign allies, especially France. Its campaigns included the defense of Boston, the crossing of the Delaware River, the Saratoga campaign, and the Yorktown operation.

The Continental Army was not identical to the modern United States Army. Congress disbanded most of it after the Revolutionary War, and the present U.S. Army traces its institutional history through later reorganizations and predecessor forces.
