What was the name of the Apollo 17 lunar rover used on the final crewed Moon landing?
Answer
Lunar Roving Vehicle
Answer
Lunar Roving Vehicle
The Apollo 17 lunar rover was officially called the Lunar Roving Vehicle.
Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt used the battery-powered vehicle in December 1972. It allowed them to travel much farther from the lunar module than astronauts could walk, expanding the area available for geological study and sample collection.
The vehicle was folded for launch and carried in a storage bay on the lunar module. Once deployed, it used four independently driven wheels and a navigation system designed for the Moon’s harsh environment. Its top speed was roughly 13 kilometres per hour, although lunar terrain limited practical travel.
The Lunar Roving Vehicle had already been used on Apollo 15 and Apollo 16. Apollo 17 was its third and final lunar mission, and it remains the last crewed mission to land humans on the Moon.
