What was the name of the Allied ultimatum accepted by Japan in August 1945?

The story behind the answer

Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration in August 1945.

The declaration was issued on July 26, 1945, by the United States, the United Kingdom, and China during the Potsdam Conference. It set out the terms for Japan’s surrender and warned that refusal would bring “prompt and utter destruction.”

Its conditions called for the disarmament of Japanese forces, the removal of leaders responsible for militarism, and the occupation of selected Japanese territory. It also stated that Japanese sovereignty would be limited to the home islands and other islands designated by the Allies.

The declaration did not directly settle the future status of Emperor Hirohito, an issue that mattered greatly to Japan’s leaders. After the United States clarified that the emperor and government would remain subject to the authority of the Allied supreme commander, Japan formally accepted the terms.
