Answer
Potsdam Declaration
Answer
Potsdam Declaration
The Potsdam Declaration set surrender terms for Japan in July 1945.
Issued on July 26, 1945, the declaration was released by the United States, the United Kingdom, and China. It called for the unconditional surrender of Japan’s armed forces and warned that refusal would bring “prompt and utter destruction.”
The declaration also outlined postwar goals, including the removal of militarist influence, the occupation of selected Japanese territory, disarmament, and the establishment of conditions supporting peaceful government. It stated that Japanese sovereignty would be limited to the home islands and other territories determined by the Allies.
Japan initially did not accept the declaration. After the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet entry into the war against Japan, Japanese leaders moved toward surrender. Hirohito’s August 15 broadcast announced acceptance of the terms, and the Instrument of Surrender was signed on September 2.
