Potsdam Declaration
Answer
Potsdam Declaration
Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration when it announced its surrender in August 1945.
The declaration was issued on July 26, 1945, by the United States, the United Kingdom, and China. It set out the Allied terms for Japan’s surrender and warned of “prompt and utter destruction” if Japan refused them.
Its provisions called for the disarmament of Japanese forces, the occupation of designated Japanese territory, the removal of militarist influence, and the establishment of democratic tendencies. It also stated that Japan would be limited largely to the home islands and other territories determined by the Allies.
The declaration did not explicitly settle Emperor Hirohito’s future. Japan’s final acceptance included a condition that the emperor’s authority would be subject to the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers. The Soviet Union was not an original signatory because it was still neutral toward Japan when the declaration was issued.
