The accounting firm that audited Wirecard before its 2020 collapse was EY, formerly known as Ernst & Young.
EY had audited Wirecard for many years and signed off on the company’s financial statements. In June 2020, Wirecard disclosed that €1.9 billion supposedly held in trustee accounts probably did not exist.
The revelation caused Wirecard to file for insolvency, making it one of Germany’s most significant corporate scandals. A parliamentary investigation later examined the roles of auditors, regulators, banks, and company executives.
A common mix-up is confusing EY with KPMG, which conducted a special investigation commissioned by Wirecard in 2019. That review did not serve as the company’s regular statutory audit.
