Answer
Asian financial crisis
The 1997 currency crisis that began when Thailand devalued the baht was the Asian financial crisis.
Thailand abandoned the baht’s long-standing dollar peg on July 2, 1997, after intense pressure on its foreign-exchange reserves. The baht then depreciated sharply, making dollar-denominated debts much harder for Thai companies and banks to repay.
Financial stress spread across East and Southeast Asia. Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, and the Philippines experienced severe currency, banking, and stock-market turmoil, although the effects and policy responses differed from country to country.
The International Monetary Fund organized major assistance programs, especially for Thailand, Indonesia, and South Korea. The crisis is sometimes called the Asian financial crisis rather than simply the Thai crisis because contagion reached several economies and financial markets throughout the region.
