Apollo 11 was the 1969 mission that first landed humans on the Moon.
NASA launched Apollo 11 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 16, 1969. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle in the Sea of Tranquility on July 20, while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module Columbia.
Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface, followed by Aldrin. The astronauts collected lunar samples, conducted experiments, and returned safely to Earth on July 24, 1969.
Apollo 11 is often confused with Apollo 8, the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon, and Apollo 10, which rehearsed the landing without touching down. Apollo 12 made the second crewed lunar landing later in 1969.
