Black Tuesday was the 1929 Wall Street trading day with the greatest share volume at the time.
On October 29, 1929, about 16 million shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange. The enormous volume reflected panic selling after earlier declines had already undermined confidence in the market. Prices fell heavily, and many investors were unable to escape losses.
Black Tuesday is the most famous date in the Wall Street Crash of 1929, but the disaster developed across several sessions. Black Thursday came on October 24, and Black Monday followed on October 28. The market continued falling after October 29 before eventually reaching a much lower level in 1932.
The phrase “greatest share volume at the time” matters because later markets regularly surpassed the raw share total. Comparing volume across decades also requires caution: the number of listed companies, trading technology, and share splits changed substantially.
