What was the name of the 1929 U.S. stock-market day when the Dow fell nearly 12%?

The story behind the answer

Black Tuesday was 29 October 1929, the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell nearly 12% during the Wall Street Crash.

The collapse followed years of heavy speculation in American shares. Many investors bought stocks with borrowed money, expecting prices to keep rising. When confidence weakened in October, forced selling and fear fed one another.

Black Tuesday was not the first bad session of the crisis. Black Thursday, on 24 October, brought an earlier panic, while Black Monday on 28 October saw another severe decline. The sequence of selling days made the crash a defining financial event.

The market continued falling after 29 October, and the Dow did not regain its 1929 peak until 1954. The crash helped deepen the economic crisis that became the Great Depression, although historians generally describe the Depression as resulting from multiple interacting causes rather than from the stock-market collapse alone.
