What was the name of the 1907 U.S. financial panic that J.P. Morgan helped contain?

The story behind the answer

The 1907 U.S. financial panic was called the Panic of 1907.

The crisis began after an unsuccessful attempt to corner the stock of United Copper Company caused a run on Knickerbocker Trust Company in New York. Depositors withdrew funds from other trust companies, spreading fear through the financial system. Several institutions faced failures or suspension of payments.

J. P. Morgan organized private rescue financing and persuaded banks to provide liquidity. His intervention helped prevent a broader collapse, but the episode demonstrated that the United States lacked a permanent central bank capable of acting as a lender of last resort.

The Panic of 1907 helped create political support for the Federal Reserve System, which Congress established in 1913. It is sometimes confused with the Panic of 1893, another severe U.S. financial crisis, but the two occurred in different decades and had different immediate triggers.
