What was the name of the 1876 event in Philadelphia that became the first official U.S. world’s fair?

The story behind the answer

The Centennial Exposition was the 1876 Philadelphia event that became the first official world’s fair held in the United States.

Its formal title was the International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures, and Products of the Soil and Mine, but it is usually known as the Centennial Exposition. The event commemorated the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

The exposition occupied a large area of Fairmount Park and included exhibition halls, machinery displays, state buildings, and international exhibits. Its opening ceremony was attended by President Ulysses S. Grant and Emperor Pedro II of Brazil.

The Centennial Exposition is often mixed up with the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and Philadelphia’s 1926 Sesquicentennial Exposition. Those were different fairs held for different anniversaries and historical purposes.
