Snap’s mini drone announced in April 2022 was called Pixy. Snap presented it as a pocket-sized flying camera designed to give Snapchat users a new way to record themselves and their surroundings.
Pixy was deliberately simpler than a conventional camera drone. It had no handheld controller, offered four preset flight paths, and could float, orbit, or follow its user. At the end of a flight, it was designed to land gently in the owner’s hand. Its bright yellow, palm-sized body also made it part camera accessory and part Snapchat-branded gadget.
The footage was wirelessly transferred into Snapchat Memories, where users could crop it for portrait video and add Lenses, Sounds, and editing effects before sharing. Snap launched Pixy in the United States and France at $229.99, but the product had a short commercial life: Snap said in August 2022 that it was discontinuing further investment in the drone.
Pixy is sometimes confused with Spectacles, Snap’s camera glasses. Spectacles are wearable; Pixy was an autonomous flying camera.
