Snapchat’s discontinued peer-to-peer payment feature was called Snapcash. Snapchat introduced Snapcash in 2014 through a partnership with Square, allowing users in the United States to send money to friends from within Snapchat conversations.
The service used Square’s payment infrastructure while Snapchat supplied the social and messaging interface. Users linked a debit card, entered a dollar amount in chat, and sent the payment much like sending a message. The feature was an early example of a social app combining communication with financial transactions.
Snapcash was discontinued on August 30, 2018. Its closure is sometimes confused with the names of other payment services, especially Venmo, PayPal, or Cash App. Those are separate products; Snapcash was Snapchat’s own branded payment feature, created with Square. The name “Snap Pay” was never the canonical name of this service.
