Rembrandt’s only surviving child with Saskia was Titus van Rijn.
Titus was born in Amsterdam in 1641, shortly before his mother died. His three older siblings—Rumbartus, Cornelia, and another Cornelia—died in infancy. Titus therefore became the couple’s only child to reach adulthood.
Rembrandt portrayed Titus several times, including as a young boy and as an older youth. These images are valued both as sensitive studies of personality and as records of the family’s changing circumstances. Titus later worked with his father in the art trade rather than becoming a major independent painter.
Titus married Magdalena van Loo in 1668, but he died in Amsterdam in 1668, before his father. Their daughter, Titia, was born after Titus’s death.
