What was the name of Rembrandt’s long-term partner after Saskia van Uylenburgh died?

The story behind the answer

Hendrickje Stoffels was Rembrandt’s long-term partner after Saskia van Uylenburgh died.

Stoffels entered Rembrandt’s household in the 1640s and became his companion. They had a daughter, Cornelia, who was baptized in 1654. Because Rembrandt’s will and Saskia’s inheritance arrangements created legal complications, Stoffels and Rembrandt did not marry, although they lived together for many years.

Hendrickje also appears to have served as an important practical support in Rembrandt’s household and financial life. She was recorded as a co-founder of an art dealing business with Rembrandt and Titus, helping protect the family’s assets from creditors.

The relationship is sometimes described incorrectly as a formal marriage. Rembrandt’s first wife was Saskia, while Hendrickje was his unmarried partner. Geertgen Dircx was another former household companion whose later legal dispute with Rembrandt was separate from Stoffels’s relationship with him. Hendrickje died in 1663, several years before Rembrandt’s death.
