What was the name of Rama's mother?

The story behind the answer

Rama's mother was Kaushalya, also written Kausalya. She was the senior queen consort of King Dasharatha of Kosala, whose capital was Ayodhya. In the Ramayana, Kaushalya is Rama's birth mother and one of Dasharatha's three principal queens.

After Dasharatha's son-seeking sacrifice, the king received divine payasam and gave half of it to Kaushalya. She subsequently gave birth to Rama, the eldest and most prominent of his sons. Kaikeyi became the mother of Bharata, while Sumitra became the mother of the twins Lakshmana and Shatrughna.

Kaushalya's story is closely tied to the emotional center of the Ayodhya episode. When Kaikeyi invokes her two boons, Rama is sent into fourteen years of exile instead of being crowned. Kaushalya grieves, tries to prevent his departure, and later mourns Dasharatha's death. After Rama returns and becomes king, she is honored as queen mother. A frequent mix-up is confusing Kaushalya with Kaikeyi: Kaikeyi is Rama's stepmother and the queen whose demand caused his exile.
