Prince’s only child, who died shortly after birth, was named Amiir. His full name was Amiir Nelson, and he was Prince’s son with Mayte Garcia.
Amiir was born in October 1996, the same year Prince and Garcia married. He died six days later because of Pfeiffer syndrome type 2, a rare genetic disorder affecting bone development. The condition can cause serious problems with the skull, face, hands, and breathing, and was especially severe in Amiir’s case.
The loss deeply affected both parents. Garcia later discussed Amiir’s brief life and death in her memoir, describing the emotional and medical trauma surrounding the birth. Prince rarely spoke publicly about the event, but later comments indicated that it remained one of the most painful experiences of his life.
A common misconception is that Prince had other children who survived into adulthood. He did not. Although he had several significant relationships and was involved with many musicians and performers, Amiir was his only known biological child.
