Answer
Olga Khokhlova
What was the name of Picasso’s first wife? His first wife was Olga Khokhlova, a Russian ballet dancer associated with Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.
Picasso met Khokhlova while working on Parade, the 1917 ballet produced by Diaghilev. He designed the production’s sets and costumes, and the two developed a relationship after he saw her dancing. They married on 12 July 1918 at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Paris.
Khokhlova became a major subject in Picasso’s work, especially during his more classical and refined period after World War I. Their only child was Paul Joseph Picasso, commonly known as Paulo, born in 1921.
The marriage deteriorated during the 1920s and 1930s, amid Picasso’s relationships with other women, including Marie-Thérèse Walter. Khokhlova sought a divorce in 1935, but Picasso refused the financial settlement required under French law. They remained legally married until her death in 1955. Dora Maar, Françoise Gilot, and Jacqueline Roque were important partners or muses, but none was his first wife.
