Operation Coronet
Answer
Operation Coronet
Operation Coronet was Operation Downfall’s planned second phase near Tokyo.
The Allies designed Operation Downfall as a two-stage invasion of Japan. Operation Olympic was scheduled first for November 1945 against southern Kyushu. Operation Coronet was planned for spring 1946 and would have landed on the Kantō Plain near Tokyo, the political and industrial heart of Japan.
Coronet was expected to follow the capture of bases in Kyushu. The proposed operation would have involved a massive concentration of Allied troops, including American forces and planned Commonwealth participation. Its objective was to break Japan’s remaining organized resistance and occupy the area around Tokyo.
Japan’s surrender after the atomic bombings and the Soviet entry into the war made both phases unnecessary. Coronet is therefore a planned operation, not a battle that took place. It is also distinct from Ketsugō, the Japanese defensive plan for resisting an Allied invasion of the home islands.
