What was the name of Niels Bohr's wife?
Answer
Margrethe Nørlund
Answer
Margrethe Nørlund
Niels Bohr's wife was Margrethe Nørlund. She married Bohr in Copenhagen on August 1, 1912, and remained his closest personal partner throughout his scientific career.
Margrethe was the daughter of mathematician and professor Harald Nørlund. Her family background helped connect her to Denmark's scholarly world, but she was much more than a figure in Bohr's biography. She served as an editor, translator, and trusted sounding board for his writing, helping make his often complex scientific arguments clearer.
The couple had six sons, although their first child, Christian, died in a boating accident as a teenager, and their youngest son, Harald, died as an infant. Their son Aage Bohr followed his father into physics and won the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physics for work on the structure of atomic nuclei.
Margrethe is sometimes confused with other famous women associated with early twentieth-century physics, such as Lise Meitner or Marie Curie. Neither was Bohr's wife: Margrethe Nørlund was Danish and remained closely involved in the Bohr family's intellectual and public life until her death in 1984.
