What was the name of Niels Bohr's father, a noted physiologist?
Answer
Christian Bohr
Answer
Christian Bohr
Niels Bohr’s father was Christian Bohr, a noted physiologist.
Christian Harald Lauritz Peter Emil Bohr was a Danish physician and professor of physiology at the University of Copenhagen. He married Ellen Adler, and their children included Niels Bohr, mathematician Harald Bohr, and Jenny Bohr. The family’s intellectual environment helped shape Niels’s early interest in science.
Christian Bohr made important contributions to human physiology. In 1904, he described the Bohr effect, the reduction in hemoglobin’s oxygen-binding affinity caused by increased carbon dioxide and acidity. This helps active tissues receive more oxygen. He also conducted influential research into respiration and characterized physiological “dead space.”
The name can cause confusion because several members of the family were prominent scientists. Christian Bohr was Niels’s father; Harald Bohr was Niels’s younger brother; and Aage Bohr was Niels’s son. Aage later became a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, creating a remarkable three-generation scientific family.
