What was the name of Napoleon’s son?

The story behind the answer

What was the name of Napoleon’s son? Napoleon’s son was Napoleon II, born Napoleon François Charles Joseph Bonaparte in 1811.

He was the only legitimate child of Napoleon I and his second wife, Marie Louise of Austria. Born in Paris, the infant immediately received the title King of Rome and was presented as the heir to the French Empire. His birth was politically important because Napoleon had divorced Joséphine de Beauharnais partly because she could not provide an heir.

Napoleon I abdicated in 1814 after the Allied capture of Paris and initially tried to pass the throne to his son. Napoleon II was briefly recognized by Bonapartist supporters as emperor, but he never actually governed France. After Napoleon’s final defeat at Waterloo in 1815, the child lived under Austrian supervision in Vienna.

His maternal grandfather gave him the title Duke of Reichstadt, and he was generally known at the Austrian court as Franz. He died of tuberculosis in 1832 at age 21. Napoleon III, who later became emperor, was Napoleon I’s nephew—not his son.
