What was the name of Napoleon's second wife?
Answer
Marie Louise
Answer
Marie Louise
Napoleon's second wife was Marie Louise, an Austrian archduchess who became Empress of the French. Their marriage joined Napoleon's imperial dynasty to the Habsburg royal house after years of conflict between France and Austria.
Napoleon married Marie Louise by proxy in Vienna on 11 March 1810 and in person at the Louvre on 2 April. He had divorced his first wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais, because their marriage had produced no heir. Marie Louise soon gave birth to a son, Napoleon François Charles Joseph Bonaparte, known as the King of Rome and later as Napoleon II.
The marriage briefly improved relations between France and Austria, but it did not end the wider struggle. After Napoleon's disastrous Russian campaign, Austria joined the Sixth Coalition against him. When Napoleon abdicated in 1814, Marie Louise became Duchess of Parma and ruled those Italian duchies until her death.
Marie Louise is sometimes confused with Joséphine, Napoleon's first wife, or with Maria Letizia, his mother. They were different members of Napoleon's family circle.
