What was the name of Lincoln's wife?
Answer
Mary Todd Lincoln
Answer
Mary Todd Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln’s wife was Mary Todd Lincoln. Born Mary Ann Todd in Lexington, Kentucky, she married Abraham Lincoln on November 4, 1842, when she was 23 and he was 33.
Mary came from a wealthy and politically connected Kentucky family and moved to Springfield, Illinois, in 1839. She met Lincoln through her sister Elizabeth Edwards and became closely involved in the political world of Springfield. Before marrying Lincoln, she had also been courted by Stephen A. Douglas, who later became Lincoln’s famous political opponent.
The couple had four sons: Robert, Edward, William, and Thomas. Only Robert survived both parents. Mary became First Lady when Lincoln took office in 1861 and was seated beside him at Ford’s Theatre when he was assassinated on April 14, 1865. She remained known as Mary Todd Lincoln, combining her maiden and married names, which is why “Mary Lincoln” and “Mary Todd Lincoln” both refer to her.
