What was the name of Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical soldier reconstructed in the 21st century?
Answer
Leonardo’s robot
Answer
Leonardo’s robot
Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical soldier is known as Leonardo’s robot.
Leonardo designed the humanoid machine around 1495, probably for a pageant or court entertainment in Milan. It was built inside armor and used a system of pulleys, cables, and gears that could make the figure sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head and jaw.
The original machine was apparently lost, so the modern understanding of it comes from Leonardo’s drawings and notes. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim constructed a working model based on those surviving plans. The reconstruction demonstrated that the mechanism could perform several humanlike movements.
Calling it a robot uses a modern term for a Renaissance automaton. Leonardo’s device was not an electronic machine or an autonomous artificial intelligence system; it was a mechanically programmed figure operated by physical linkages.
