Answer
Self-propelled cart
Leonardo da Vinci’s clockwork vehicle that could move without being pushed or pulled is known as the self-propelled cart.
Leonardo designed the cart around 1478–1480. Springs wound inside its mechanism stored energy, while a system of gears controlled the release of that energy to the wheels. The front wheels could be programmed to follow a set path, giving the machine a limited form of steering.
The cart was probably intended for theatrical displays or court entertainments rather than transport. It is sometimes called the first robot because it could perform a programmed movement without a person riding inside it. That label is modern and reflects its autonomous mechanical action.
The original drawing does not show every construction detail, so modern reconstructions have tested different interpretations. In 2006, engineers at the Institute and Museum of the History of Science in Florence built a working version based on Leonardo’s surviving notes.
