What was the name of J.R.R. Tolkien’s wartime regiment in World War I?
Answer
Lancashire Fusiliers
Answer
Lancashire Fusiliers
J.R.R. Tolkien served in the Lancashire Fusiliers during World War I.
After completing his studies at Oxford, Tolkien received a commission as a second lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers in 1915. He served in France during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, one of the war’s largest and bloodiest offensives.
Tolkien became ill with trench fever and was sent back to England. He was later declared unfit for general service, although he continued working in military-related roles. Most of the close friends from his school days who formed the T.C.B.S. were killed in the war, an experience that deeply affected him.
The war is often treated as a direct key to every episode in Tolkien’s fiction, but he resisted simple one-to-one interpretations. His wartime experiences nevertheless contributed to the emotional understanding of loss, friendship, endurance, and industrial destruction found in his later writing. Tolkien’s regiment is sometimes confused with the unit of another fictional or historical soldier because military service is frequently summarized too broadly.
