What was the name of J.R.R. Tolkien’s invented bear-like character in The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

Beorn is J.R.R. Tolkien’s bear-like character in The Hobbit.

Beorn is a powerful skin-changer who can take the form of a huge bear. Bilbo Baggins and the Dwarves meet him during their journey toward the Lonely Mountain, and he provides them with food, shelter, and advice before the group continues through Mirkwood.

Beorn later appears at the Battle of the Five Armies, where his strength helps defeat the goblins. His name and transformation draw on northern European literary traditions, including the Old English word beorn, meaning “man” or “warrior,” which is related to the idea of a bear in Germanic naming traditions.
