Ernest Hemingway’s first book, a collection of short stories and poems published in 1923, was Three Stories and Ten Poems.

The book was privately printed in Paris by Robert McAlmon’s Contact Publishing Company in a small edition of just 300 copies. Hemingway was living in Paris during this period, part of the expatriate literary circle later associated with the “Lost Generation.”

The three stories were “Up in Michigan,” “Out of Season,” and “My Old Man.” The volume’s ten poems included “Mitraigliatrice,” “Oklahoma,” “Montparnasse,” and “Along With Youth.” Some of these works reflect Hemingway’s early experiments with spare prose, war imagery, travel, and displacement.

A common mix-up is confusing this debut collection with In Our Time, published in 1924. In Our Time was an important early collection, but it was Hemingway’s second book. His first commercially significant novel, The Sun Also Rises, followed in 1926.
