Harley-Davidson’s 1977 factory custom motorcycle with a café-racer style was the XLCR.
The XLCR was based on the Sportster platform but received a distinctive café-racer-inspired appearance. Its features included a solo seat, a small front fairing, a rear-set riding position, and blacked-out styling. The name combined the Sportster’s XL designation with “CR,” commonly interpreted as café racer.
The XLCR is sometimes confused with the XR-1000, another performance-oriented Sportster derivative, or with the FXR and FXRT, which belonged to different Harley-Davidson model families. The XLCR was a short-lived and visually unusual factory model.
Although sales were limited, the motorcycle later became influential among collectors and custom builders. Its compact proportions and aggressive styling made it one of Harley-Davidson’s clearest attempts to interpret the European café-racer trend for a factory motorcycle.
