What was the name of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s mother?
Answer
Maria Nechaeva
Answer
Maria Nechaeva
Fyodor Dostoevsky’s mother was named Maria Nechaeva.
Maria Fyodorovna Nechaeva married Mikhail Andreevich Dostoevsky, a doctor who worked at Moscow’s Mariinsky Hospital for the Poor. The couple had seven children, including Fyodor, who was born in 1821.
Dostoevsky’s early home life was connected to the hospital complex where his father worked. The family lived in an apartment on the hospital grounds, exposing the children to both a religious household and the social realities of patients from poor backgrounds.
Maria died in 1837, when Fyodor was fifteen. Her death was followed by major changes in the family’s circumstances, including the children’s education away from home. She should not be confused with Anna Snitkina, Dostoevsky’s second wife, or Maria Isaeva, his first wife.
