What was the name of Francis Drake's ship during his circumnavigation?

The story behind the answer

Francis Drake’s ship during his circumnavigation was the Golden Hind. The vessel carried Drake around the world from 1577 to 1580 and returned to England with a celebrated cargo of spices and captured Spanish treasure.

The ship originally sailed under the name Pelican. Drake renamed it Golden Hind on 20 August 1578, honoring his patron Sir Christopher Hatton, whose heraldic emblem was a golden hind, or female red deer. The expedition began with five ships, but storms, disease, and difficult navigation reduced the fleet; the Golden Hind ultimately completed the voyage alone.

During the Pacific leg, Drake captured the Spanish treasure ship Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, often called Cacafuego, in March 1579. The Golden Hind then crossed the Pacific, visited the Spice Islands, rounded the Cape of Good Hope, and reached Plymouth on 26 September 1580.

Victoria is a frequent mix-up because Magellan’s expedition used that ship to complete the first circumnavigation, although Magellan himself did not survive. Modern replicas are often spelled Golden Hinde, but the historic ship is generally known as the Golden Hind.
