Answer
Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War
Emperor Hirohito's 1945 address announcing Japan's acceptance of Allied terms was the Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War.
The rescript was recorded on 14 August and broadcast to the Japanese public at noon on 15 August. It stated that Japan had decided to accept the joint declaration issued at Potsdam, while referring to the devastating effects of a “new and most cruel bomb.” Its highly formal language made the announcement difficult for many listeners to understand immediately.
The address was not a live speech. Palace officials played a recording made by Hirohito, whose voice had rarely been heard publicly. A clarification followed the broadcast so listeners would understand that the message meant Japan was ending the war and accepting surrender.
The title is sometimes confused with the Potsdam Declaration, which was the Allied demand Japan accepted. It is also distinct from the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, the legal document signed on 2 September 1945.
