What was the name of Dostoevsky’s younger brother who co-edited the journals Vremya and Epoch?

The story behind the answer

Mikhail Dostoevsky was Fyodor Dostoevsky’s younger brother and co-editor of Vremya and Epoch.

Mikhail Mikhailovich Dostoevsky was born in 1820, one year before Fyodor. He was a writer, translator, and editor who worked closely with his brother in literary publishing. Together they established the journal Vremya in 1861, and after its closure they helped produce Epoch.

Vremya published works connected with the brothers’ vision of pochvennichestvo, a movement that emphasized ties between educated Russians and native soil and traditions. The journal also published important contemporary writing, including work by Fyodor.

Mikhail died in 1864. His death deeply affected Fyodor, who was already facing financial and personal difficulties. Readers sometimes confuse Mikhail with Andrei Dostoevsky, another brother who later wrote memoirs and worked in government service. Mikhail was the sibling directly associated with Fyodor’s major journal-editing partnership.
