What was the name of Dostoevsky’s son who died at age three?

The story behind the answer

Dostoevsky’s son who died at age three was Alexei Dostoyevsky.

Alexei was born in 1875 to Fyodor Dostoevsky and Anna Snitkina. He died in 1878, aged three, after suffering an epileptic seizure. Dostoevsky himself had epilepsy, and the illness was a recurring concern in the family’s life and in interpretations of his fiction.

Alexei’s death was not the same family tragedy as the death of the couple’s first child, Sofia, who died in infancy. The surviving children included Lyubov, born in 1869, and Fyodor, born in 1871. Family chronology can therefore be important when distinguishing the children in biographical questions.

The child’s death deeply affected both parents. Dostoevsky’s final years were marked by intense literary work, public recognition, and private grief before his death in 1881.
