What was the name of Coco Chanel’s first major patron and companion?
Answer
Étienne Balsan
Answer
Étienne Balsan
Coco Chanel’s first major patron and companion was Étienne Balsan.
Balsan was a wealthy French textile heir and racehorse owner whom Chanel met after her early singing work. He introduced her to an affluent social world and allowed her to live at his estate, where she began making hats for herself and friends.
Those millinery experiments helped Chanel move from amateur hatmaking toward a professional fashion career. Her first Paris millinery shop opened in 1910, and her reputation expanded as clients sought her simple, modern designs.
Balsan is often confused with Arthur “Boy” Capel, the English polo player and businessman who became Chanel’s later lover and important financial supporter. The two men played different roles: Balsan helped provide her early social and material setting, while Capel supported the expansion of her business.
