Coco was the name of the 1969 Broadway musical about Coco Chanel.
The musical featured music and lyrics by André Prévin, with a book by Alan Jay Lerner. It dramatized Chanel’s return to the fashion world and her later career, rather than presenting a complete documentary biography.
Katharine Hepburn originated the title role on Broadway. The production opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York in December 1969 and ran for more than 300 performances. The title used Chanel’s famous professional nickname, making it distinct from films and television dramas that used longer titles.
The musical should not be confused with the 2008 television film Coco Chanel or the 2009 feature film Coco Before Chanel. Those productions were separate screen biographies and had different casts and creative teams.
