Powerade was Coca-Cola’s first sports drink, launched in 1988.
The brand was created to compete in the growing market for beverages designed to replace fluids and electrolytes during physical activity. Powerade was positioned as a sports beverage and became a major competitor to PepsiCo’s Gatorade.
Powerade’s product line has included formulations containing water, carbohydrates, and electrolytes. The brand has also been promoted through sports partnerships and athletic events, helping Coca-Cola build a presence beyond traditional carbonated soft drinks.
Powerade is sometimes confused with Coca-Cola’s later acquisitions and investments in enhanced-water brands. Those products belong to different beverage categories, while Powerade was specifically introduced as the company’s sports-drink brand.
