Cleopatra’s daughter who became queen of Mauretania was Cleopatra Selene II. She was the only daughter of Cleopatra VII of Egypt and the Roman triumvir Mark Antony, born in Alexandria around 40 BC as the twin sister of Alexander Helios.

After her parents’ defeat and deaths in 30 BC, Cleopatra Selene and her brothers were taken to Rome. She was raised in the household of Octavia the Younger, Octavian’s sister and Mark Antony’s former wife. This unusual upbringing connected the last Ptolemaic princess to the Roman ruling family that had conquered her parents.
