Michel was born in 1878 to Claude Monet and Camille Doncieux. He was the couple’s second son, following Jean Monet, who was born in 1867. Camille died in 1879, the year after Michel’s birth, and Monet’s later household included Alice Hoschedé and her children.

Michel Monet became closely associated with his father’s legacy. He inherited the Giverny property and many works after Claude Monet’s death. In 1966, Michel donated Monet’s remaining collection of Japanese woodblock prints to the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris.

Michel is sometimes confused with Jean because both were Monet’s sons and appeared in family-related accounts. Jean later became involved in the management of the family’s artistic estate, while Michel is particularly remembered for preserving and donating his father’s collection.
