What was the name of China’s first crewed spacecraft?
Answer
Shenzhou 5
Answer
Shenzhou 5
Shenzhou 5 was China’s first crewed spacecraft.
China launched Shenzhou 5 on 15 October 2003 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. Astronaut Yang Liwei flew aboard the spacecraft, completing 14 Earth orbits during a mission lasting about 21 hours.
The flight made China the third country to send humans into orbit independently, after the Soviet Union and the United States. Shenzhou 5 used a design influenced by the Russian Soyuz spacecraft but was developed as part of China’s own human-spaceflight program.
Shenzhou 6 followed in 2005 and carried two astronauts. Chang’e spacecraft belong to China’s lunar exploration program, while Tiangong refers to China’s space-station program, so those names are not alternatives to Shenzhou 5.
