American Airlines’ first frequent-flyer program, launched in 1981, was called AAdvantage. It rewarded eligible passengers with miles based largely on their travel and allowed those miles to be exchanged for benefits.
AAdvantage was created during a period of major change in the United States airline industry. Airline deregulation had increased competition, and carriers sought ways to attract repeat customers rather than selling every seat solely on price.
The program helped popularize the modern airline loyalty model. Its name combines the airline’s name with the idea of an advantage for returning customers. Over time, AAdvantage added elite status levels, partner earning, and award travel.
The other options are programs belonging to different airlines. MileagePlus is associated with United Airlines, SkyMiles with Delta Air Lines, and Executive Club with British Airways. These names should not be treated as generic terms for frequent-flyer schemes.
