What was the main purpose of Leonardo da Vinci’s self-propelled cart?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s self-propelled cart was mainly designed for stage entertainment.

Leonardo sketched the cart around 1478–1480. Springs stored energy and released it through a system of gears, allowing the vehicle to move without being pushed by a person or pulled by an animal. Steering could be set in advance through a programmable mechanism, giving the cart a planned path.

The cart is often called an ancestor of the automobile, but it was not a road vehicle in the modern sense. Its limited stored energy and short operating range made it better suited to theatrical demonstrations or court spectacles than everyday transportation.

The intended use is inferred from the design’s scale, mechanism, and Renaissance court context. The cart’s importance is its combination of stored power, automatic movement, and preset steering—features that make it an early example of a programmable machine.
