Who Are You was the last studio album recorded with The Who’s drummer Keith Moon.

Released in August 1978, Who Are You was The Who’s eighth studio album and the final one to feature Moon. He died less than a month after its release, making the record an especially important dividing line in the band’s history. The group later toured with Kenney Jones, who replaced Moon as drummer.

The recording sessions were difficult because Moon’s health and playing had deteriorated. Producers Glyn Johns and Jon Astley struggled to keep the sessions moving, and Moon reportedly had trouble maintaining time on “Music Must Change,” whose drums were ultimately removed. Most of the album’s remaining drum parts were completed late in the production, while the title track retained Moon’s performance.

The album was commercially successful despite the troubled sessions. It reached No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart. Its cover, showing Moon sitting on a chair marked “Not to Be Taken Away,” later acquired an unintendedly haunting association with his death.
