What was the Japanese title of Pokémon Red and Green’s enhanced 1996 version?
Answer
Pokémon Blue
Answer
Pokémon Blue
Pokémon Blue was the enhanced Japanese version released after Pokémon Red and Green in 1996.
In Japan, Pocket Monsters Blue was first offered as a mail-order special edition to CoroCoro Comic subscribers on October 15, 1996. It later received a general retail release in Japan in 1999. The version included updated artwork, revised programming, and changed dialogue compared with the original Red and Green cartridges.
The international Pokémon Red and Blue releases were based largely on this improved Japanese Blue version. However, they retained the original Red and Green distribution of obtainable Pokémon so that the two Western versions could continue to function as complementary trading editions.
This history creates a frequent naming trap. “Blue” can refer to the Japanese enhanced version or to the international pair’s Blue version, but they were not identical releases. Pokémon Yellow came later as an anime-influenced edition, while Pokémon Crystal followed Gold and Silver as a separate enhanced version.
