What was the Japanese release date of Pocket Monsters Stadium for Nintendo 64?

The story behind the answer

Pocket Monsters Stadium was released in Japan on August 1, 1998, for the Nintendo 64. It was a Japan-only Pokémon battle game and the first entry in the Stadium line.

The game let players battle using selected Pokémon from the Game Boy titles through Nintendo 64 graphics and the Transfer Pak. Technical limitations meant that only 40 Pokémon were available for battles, rather than the full 151 from the first generation.

Pocket Monsters Stadium is often confused with the internationally released Pokémon Stadium. The Western Pokémon Stadium was a later 1999 title in Japan and a 2000 release in North America, Europe, and Australia. It expanded the battle roster to all 151 original Pokémon.

The Japanese game was initially planned as a Nintendo 64DD title, but it was converted to a standard cartridge. Its release helped demonstrate how Pokémon could connect handheld progress with home-console battles.
