Bloody Mary was Mary I of England, who ruled as queen from 1553 until her death in 1558. She was the daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, and became the first woman to rule England in her own right without a king serving as her co-monarch.

Mary was a committed Roman Catholic who attempted to reverse the Protestant reforms introduced during the reigns of her father and her half-brother, Edward VI. Her government prosecuted Protestant heresy, and more than 280 people were burned at the stake during her reign. These persecutions led to the enduring nickname “Bloody Mary.”

She is often confused with the tomato-based cocktail or the mirror-ghost legend, but those uses developed separately. Mary also married Philip II of Spain in 1554, although the marriage was politically controversial and produced no surviving heir.
