The original 1964 Porsche 911 produced 130 hp.
The first production 911 used a newly developed 2.0-liter, air-cooled, rear-mounted flat-six engine. Its 130-horsepower output gave Porsche a significant step beyond the four-cylinder 356, while the engine’s smoothness and compact layout helped define the 911 character. Series production began in September 1964, following the car’s public presentation as the 901 in 1963.
The 130-hp figure applies to the standard early 911, not every model sold under the 911 name. Porsche later introduced the 911 S with 160 hp, while the lower-priced 911 T arrived with 110 hp. Those variants explain why other horsepower figures can appear in accounts of early 911 history.
The 911’s rear-engine, horizontally opposed layout remained a defining feature as the model evolved. Its six-cylinder configuration also distinguished it from the Porsche 912, which used a four-cylinder engine derived from the 356.
