What was the highest position of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” on the US Billboard Hot 100?

The story behind the answer

Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” reached number 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Released as the lead single from The Black Album on July 29, 1991, “Enter Sandman” became Metallica’s first major pop-chart breakthrough. Its number-16 peak placed the song firmly inside the US singles chart’s Top 20, an important achievement for a heavy-metal band at the time.

The track performed even better on rock radio, reaching number 10 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart. Its heavy riff, dramatic dynamics, and accessible chorus helped it become one of the best-known songs in Metallica’s catalog. The accompanying video, directed by Wayne Isham, strengthened its exposure through music television.

The song’s Hot 100 position is sometimes confused with its rankings in other countries or on specialist rock charts. “Nothing Else Matters,” another Black Album single, had a different chart history, while “Wherever I May Roam” performed particularly strongly on the Mainstream Rock chart. “Enter Sandman” ultimately became a durable concert staple and was certified platinum by the RIAA.
